Free Crochet Pattern: Norwegian Forest Blanket

10/07/2019 by Dada Filed Under: Crochet blankets, Free crochet patterns 40 Comments

Free crochet blanket pattern by dadas place

This week is my birthday. When I was a child my birthday and New Year’s Day were my 2 favorite days in a whole year. Growing older I stopped being so excited about my birthday. Don’t know why. When I gave birth to my son, I almost completely neglected to celebrate my birthday. It became an ordinary day. But recently, I started to appreciate much more everything relating to myself. I stopped seeing myself only as my son’s mother, or my husband’s wife, or my father’s daughter. It somehow became enough simply being Dragana. I became excited about my birthday again. So, to celebrate it I want to give you something. I know that everybody like free crochet patterns, so I decided to publish one of my paid patterns for free, here on my blog. It’s my gift to you.

So, let’s get started!

Florina Pillow Pattern

27/05/2019 by Dada Filed Under: Crochet pillows 2 Comments

Ever since I made the pattern for my Floral Granny Square, I have planned to make the pattern for the whole pillow. But I always had some other new projects waiting to be finished or tried out, and with time I completely forgot about it.

And then one of my customers emailed me and asked if I would offer the pattern for the whole pillow not only for the flowery square. I thought: “Why not?” So, I did it. I made the pattern for the Florina pillow.

Flower granny square pillow pattern

This is a pillow with two different crochet sides. At first I wanted to crochet only one side, and to add a fabric on the back (as I always do), but while I was working on the blue-pink side, the idea of a pastel pillow version suddenly came up. Needless to say, I immediately took a glance at my yarn stash, chose some pale pink, pale blue, yellow, beige and white colors and made several squares. I really liked how they turned out, and decided that my Florina pillow will have two sides. Because I couldn’t decide which one to chose.

As so many times before, for this pillow I used my reliable, good old “Tango” yarn – 100% cotton, 125m/50g. But of course, you can be creative and use whatever yarn you have or like.

The size: approximately 40 x 40 cm. (15.7” x 15.7”)

The pattern is as always, very detailed, beginner friendly and as I like to say “brain friendly”– because with my patterns you don’t have to strain your brain at all. All you have to do is grab your crochet hook, the yarn and follow the pictures. There are lots of step-by-step pictures. 85 to be exact! I also included the crochet chart for the square for all of you who prefer charts. I’m a visual person and I love charts!

Kaya Shawl Pattern

23/04/2019 by Dada Filed Under: Scarves and shawls, Uncategorized 5 Comments

This shawl is one of those totally unexpected projects. Like, you work on something completely different, and then an idea in some way related to the thing you’re working on, pops up in your head, and you just have to try it out. You don’t want to let it go. That happened to me with this shawl. I was working on figuring out a border for a blanket, and when I finished it, I saw that if repeated, that border could be used in a simple triangle shawl. Needless to say, I immediately grabbed my crochet hook and some pale greenish yarn from my stash, and started to build this shawl. It went so smoothly that I really enjoyed the whole process.

There are some patterns which are very hard to give birth to, and there are patterns which are so easy and effortless. Kaya shawl is definitely the latter kind of the pattern. Maybe that’s the main reason I decided to name it Kaya shawl, after my paternal grandmother who I loved so much, so effortlessly. I probably spent my happiest childhood days in her house, playing with my sister, and our neighbors. She gave me that incredible feeling of protection and unconditional love, and I’m forever grateful to her for that.

Let’s say a few words about the shawl. I love how simple it is, but interesting at the same time, which is a quality I appreciate very much. It has a beautiful texture created with popcorn stitches and empty spaces. It can be made with any yarn. I used 100% cotton yarn, 170m/50g. The pale blue-green version is made with Maja yarn by Bimtex, and the pink version is made with Cotton 8 by Stoff & stil. I used 3.5 mm crochet hook.
The finished shawl measures approximately 158 cm x 77 cm (62” x30”). I would say it’s an ideal project for an intermediate crocheter or even an ambitious beginner who wants to improve their crochet skills and learn new stitches.

The pattern is written in English using US crochet terms. There are 20 step-by-step pictures, and 2 crochet charts for all of you who prefer charts. I personally love charts. When you take a look at it, you can instantly see what stitches are used, and know everything you’re supposed to do to accomplish the pattern. You have the picture of the whole pattern in front of you. I really like that.
