Little Sheep Crochet Tote Bag

28/06/2016 by Dada Filed Under: Crochet bags 7 Comments

Little Sheep Crochet Bag with Little Sheep Crochet Blanket

I didn’t plan to make this crochet bag. It just happened, somehow accidentally, as a byproduct of my Little Sheep Baby Blanket pattern. I made the front side of the bag for the step-by-step tutorial of how to join squares and make the border, and only when I completely finished the pattern, it crossed my mind that I could use it for something. A bag was the first thing that came to mind. I just needed to crochet straps, to sew the back side of the bag and to insert lining. Easy.

Unique Little Sheep Crochet Bag

The longest part, which took majority of my time, was crocheting the straps. Because you know, I had to add that white raffle on the sides. The rest was easy-peasy.

Unique Little Sheep Crochet Bag

I used the same “Tango” yarn as for my Little Sheep Blanket. It’s 100% cotton yarn, wonderful, and I love it! I used this yarn for majority of my crochet projects, because it’s beautiful and inexpensive. The only problem with this yarn is that I never know which colors I will find in a yarn shop, so, many times I had to change my initial color palette for some project, because I couldn’t find specific color, which was available the previous time I went shopping.

I love to add texture to my crochet, to make a piece more interesting, and this sheep granny square is very textured. Can I say also very interesting? Anyway, I like how it turned out!

For this crochet tote bag I used Little Sheep granny square, which is a part of my Little Sheep Baby Blanket Pattern.

What else can I say about this bag? I enjoyed making it, it was one of my most satisfying small crochet projects, so I will definitely make more crochet bags in the future. Because they are easy to make, inexpensive, beautiful, and very useful.

Crochet pattern: Little Sheep Baby Blanket

Crochet pattern Little sheep baby blanket

For a long time I had an idea for a cute little sheep granny square in my head, but there was always something, maybe not more urgent, but a project I started, or a project which I kept even longer in my head, so the little sheep granny square had to wait its time. After several flowery pattern I made in the meantime, it was time for little sheep to finally show its cute little face to the world! Let me introduce to you: Little Sheep Baby Blanket! It’s the fourth blanket in my animal blanket series which includes:
* Teddy Bear Blanket
* Little Lion Blanket
* Rainbow Lion Blanket

Update: Vintage Style Teddy Bear Blanket is available now! (in English and German)

Crochet little sheep baby blanket

The blanket is approximately 83 cm (32.5″) long and 70 cm (27.5″) wide. It’s consisted of 30 squares (6×5), 30 little sheep heads, and I enjoyed immensely making it.

Every time I finished a square I had a feeling that one little sheep has just come alive! There is something special with the grannies which have eyes and a muzzle on it! At least to me, because it’s so obvious that I love (very, very much) cute, happy things and creatures.

Yarn. I’m very happy and grateful that I have access to such great yarn like “Tango” from St. George (manufacturer from Serbia) which I used for this blanket. “Tango” is 100% cotton yarn 125m/50g, which is (according to Wikipedia) 3 or Light in the USA; DK (Double Knit) or 8 ply in the UK; 8 ply in Australia. I used 3.5 mm crochet hook (USA – size 4/E, UK-9)

The border is very simple, and when I say “very simple” that means that you don’t have to count stitches at all, you just repeat the same stitch along the row… which means that you’re free to listen without distraction to your favorite audio book, or to your favorite podcast. I love to listen for example to The Lively Show, a podcast by Jess Lively or to The School of Greatness podcast by Lewis Howes, these 2 are among my favorites, along with unavoidable Hay House Radio (radio for your soul!).

Little sheep crochet baby blanket step-by-step tutorial

* Step by step instruction on how to make Little Sheep granny square and border
* Step-by-step instruction on how to join squares
* Written pattern for Little Sheep granny square and border

Free crochet flowery hexagon tutorial
As I promised in my last post, I prepared for you the free pattern and step by step tutorial for this flowery hexagon. It’s very simple crochet project and so easy to make. I think that this pattern would be a perfect project for an advanced beginner who has mastered the basic stitches. For this hexagon I used 100% cotton yarn 125m/50gr called “Tango” by St. George, and 3.5 mm crochet hook.

The tutorial is written using U.S. crochet terms.
Stitches we will use:
Magic ring
Single crochet – sc
Double crochet – dc
Slip stitch – sl st
Chain stitch – ch
Special stitches:
Popcorn stitch
Cluster (dc3tog)-double crochet three together
So, let’s get started!

We’ll start with a magic ring. Make 6 sc in the ring.
Pull the yarn tail and close the ring.

Join with slip stitch to the first sc.
Now, we’re going to make a Popcorn stitch, so make ch-3 (counts as dc)
Free crochet hexagon step by step tutorial
Make 4 dc in the same space.
Now, drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from front to back into the space between the initial ch-3 and the first dc, then grab the dropped loop with the hook,

and pull it through the stitch. We’ve just made our first Popcorn stitch!
Now, make ch-4;

Make 5 dc in the next sc.
Drop the loop from your hook. Now, look at the picture to see where you should insert your hook. It’s the first dc of the group of 5 dc.

Make an “incomplete” dc – yarn over, insert hook in the same chain-4 space, yarn over and pull up loop (you should have 3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook – now stop. You should have 2 loops on the hook.
Make another “incomplete” dc in the same space. you should have 3 loops on the hook.

To complete Cluster stitch, yarn over and draw the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
Now, we’re going to make another Cluster (dc3tog) in the same ch-4 space, so make ch-3;

Make dc in the next space (where we’ve already made ch-3 and dc);
We will finish the hexagon with an invisible join. Cut the yarn and pull it through the stitch. Thread the tapestry needle, skip the beginning ch-3 (marked by arrow in the picture), and insert your needle below both loops of the next dc, from back to front, and pull it through.

Insert the needle back, in the last dc you made – through the back loop only, from front to back, and pull it through. Weave in yarn end.
The join is invisible. Isn’t it?

And now you have it! The flowery hexagon! You can use it for making blankets, cushions, scarfs, shawls, ponchos, bags, even rugs (which I consider making). The possibilities are endless. Let your imagination be creative…
